iOS Focus Automation Setup
iOS can't read the physical silent switch, so MuteCue uses Focus mode (Do Not Disturb) as its trigger. A one-time setup in the Shortcuts app lets MuteCue start automatically every time you enable Do Not Disturb — no extra taps required (iOS 17+).
Set up the automation
- Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.
- Tap Automation (bottom tab) → + → New Automation.
- Choose Focus → select Do Not Disturb → set the trigger to Turns On → tap Next.
- Tap New Blank Automation → search for MuteCue → select Start DND Auto Mode → tap Done.
- Repeat steps 2–4 for a second automation: trigger Do Not Disturb Turns Off → action Cancel MuteCue Timer.
That's it. From now on, enabling Do Not Disturb starts your MuteCue timer automatically, and turning it off cancels any active timer.
A few things to know
- iOS 17+: automations run silently with no confirmation tap.
- iOS 16: you'll see one tap to confirm each time — still much faster than opening the app.
- To change your reminder duration, just update it inside MuteCue on the DND Auto Mode card. You don't need to redo the Shortcuts setup.
- This setup also works on iPad.
FAQ — iOS
Why do I need to set up Shortcuts?
iOS does not allow apps to read the state of the physical silent switch. Using Do Not Disturb / Focus mode as the trigger is the closest equivalent — once set up it runs fully automatically.
The automation isn't triggering. What should I check?
Make sure the automation is enabled in Shortcuts and that you are using Do Not Disturb specifically (not a named Focus profile like Work or Sleep, unless you set up separate automations for those). Also confirm MuteCue has notification permission in Settings → Notifications.
Do I need to redo the Shortcuts setup if I change my reminder duration?
No. The automation always reads the current duration from MuteCue. Just update the DND Auto Mode duration inside the app and it takes effect immediately.
I missed the reminder — will it fire again?
Yes. MuteCue schedules follow-up reminders at +5 and +10 minutes after the first. Each one checks whether you are still silenced before firing, so you won't be bothered if you already unmuted.
Does this work on iPad?
Yes — the Focus automation setup works the same way on iPad.
FAQ — Android
How does auto-detect work?
MuteCue runs a lightweight background service that watches for ringer mode changes. When it detects you have silenced your phone, it immediately prompts you to set a reminder — no need to open the app.
The auto-detect popup isn't appearing. What should I check?
Battery optimization is the most common cause. Go to Settings → Apps → MuteCue → Battery and set it to Unrestricted (or "Don't optimize"). This prevents Android from suspending the background service.
Will the reminder fire if I restart my phone?
Yes. MuteCue requests the Receive Boot Completed permission and restores any pending reminder when your phone starts back up.
Can I use MuteCue without auto-detect?
Yes. You can open the app and set a timer manually, or use the home screen widget to start a timer with one tap.
FAQ — General
What timer durations are available?
The free version includes 15, 30, and 60-minute quick-select buttons. The one-time premium upgrade ($2.99 on iOS, $2.99 on Android) unlocks 90 minutes through 8 hours plus a custom duration slider.
Is this a subscription?
No. The premium upgrade is a one-time purchase — pay once, own it forever.
Why doesn't MuteCue just unmute my phone automatically?
You may have silenced your phone intentionally for a reason that outlasts the timer — a second meeting, a sleeping baby, a late-night situation. MuteCue reminds you; you decide.
What data does MuteCue collect?
None. All preferences stay on your device and are deleted when you uninstall the app. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
